The group needed 178,000 signatures to force the province to consider such a vote.

The question of separation could go on a provincewide ballot as early as October, as Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has said she would move forward if enough names are gathered and verified. Smith has said she personally does not support the oil-rich province leaving Canada.

A yes vote would not trigger independence automatically. Negotiations with the federal government would have to take place and Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal, said some Indigenous groups who are already using the courts to prevent an independence referendum would use venues including the courts to stop independence from happening.

Halligan’s surprise elevation to lead the pivotal prosecutorial office comes as top Trump allies sharpen their attacks on James, with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt accusing her Monday of turning the justice system into a political weapon.

“Letitia James completely abused her oath of office,” Leavitt said Monday afternoon. “What was Letitia James’s campaign slogan? President Trump scored another win at the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday after the high court temporarily agreed he can fire a member of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

The justices granted a request by the administration to place a stay on an injunction issued by Biden-appointed D.C. District Judge Loren AliKhan. That ruling attempted to bar Trump from using his executive authority to remove FTC member Rebecca Slaughter, a Democrat, from her post.

Associate Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson would have denied the government’s request to pause the injunction.

As is typical with decisions on its emergency (or “interim”) docket, the court did not provide a reasoning for the decision. It did, however, reveal that it has agreed to take up the merits of the case and is poised to hear oral arguments in December.

According to the order, the parties are instructed to answer whether “the statutory removal protections for members of the Federal Trade Commission violate the separation of powers and, if so, whether [Humphrey’s Executor v. United States] … should be overruled,” and if “a federal court may prevent a person’s removal from public office, either through relief at equity or at law.”

The court’s stay will expire once the justices hand down a judgment in the case.

For more than 30 years, the first of three shots of hepatitis B vaccine has been recommended for infants shortly after birth. Pediatricians warn that waiting four years for the vaccine opens the door to more children contracting the virus.

“Age 4 makes zero sense,” pediatrician Eric Ball said. “We recommend a universal approach to prevent those cases where a test might be incorrect or a mother might have unknowingly contracted hepatitis. It’s really the best way to keep our entire population healthy.”

Australian researchers have identified “a new kind of carbon-based material” allowing supercapacitors to store as much energy as lead-acid batteries while also performing better than conventional batteries at delivering power quickly.

According to a statement from the university on Tuesday, the results are “a major leap forward” for fast, powerful energy storage devices, and are now being commercialised by Ionic Industries.

The new material is named as multiscale reduced graphene oxide (M-rGO) and was created from naturally-occurring graphite. It is described as being made using a “rapid thermal annealing process” and featuring a “highly curved graphene structure with precise pathways for ions to move quickly and efficiently”.

The promising new material is detailed in a new paper in Nature Communications.

Monash’s Professor Mainak Majumder, who was part of the research team and heads the ARC Research Hub for Advanced Manufacturing with 2D Materials (AM2D), said that M-rGO made much more surface area available for storing energy, and which was unlocked by the method of heat treatment.

Joining me, Pennsylvania Senators Dave McCormick and John Fetterman. Pennsylvania, by the way, is one of only three states with a Democrat and Republican split in the U.S. Senate. Senators, thanks for being here. You all called me. Usually we reach out. You wanted to do this together. Why?

SEN. JOHN FETTERMAN (D-PA): Well, I mean, we thought it was just a great idea. I think it’s an important idea right now. I mean, the trauma after the Charlie Kirk assassination, and now, as things continue now, it’s like, I feel like it’s important that people can witness, you know, a Democrat and a Republican having a conversation after this. It’s absolutely horrific, and it’s entirely necessary to allow people to grieve for that. I mean, everyone’s seen the video.

SEN. DAVE MCCORMICK (R-PA): Yeah, it’s just the, the heartbreak, you feel for Charlie Kirk’s family, Eric and their children, and all the students across the country, the people across the country that were huge followers. And I think the Senator and I agreed that, and we, we do agree that there, there’s just no place in this country, for political violence. It, it’s absolutely something, it runs counter to the very idea of free, free speech and freedom, and that when you see, dangerous rhetoric, like fascist and Nazism and authoritarianism, that’s a, and, and the end of democracy, that’s a, that’s a permission.
