Far-left Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) urged New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to follow through on his campaign pledge to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and offered to assist him with the effort.

Mamdani repeatedly promised during his campaign that he would direct the New York Police Department to enforce an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court over Netanyahu’s role in the war in Gaza.

The socialist mayor has since acknowledged that New York City lacks the independent legal authority to carry out such an arrest.

“Arrest him,” Tlaib said in a statement.

“He’s a war criminal.”

Tlaib Offers to Assist with ‘Citizen’s Arrest’

Mamdani’s proposal divided House Democrats, with some endorsing the effort while others acknowledged that a city mayor has no authority to enforce an ICC warrant.

Tlaib said she was uncertain whether Mamdani could instead pursue a citizen’s arrest.

“I don’t know if it applies to citizen’s arrest,” Tlaib said.

So today, I introduced a resolution, resolution three, which was focused on finding common ground in our party on a very heartbreaking humanitarian issue, and it’s aligned with our party platform. This crisis in Gaza is urgent, and my resolution is focused on that humanitarian crisis, and makes it clear that it must be addressed as the emergency that it is.

Now I know that there are some who are interested in making changes today, but as we’ve seen, there’s divide in our party on this issue.

This is a moment that calls for shared dialogue. It calls for shared advocacy, and that’s why I’ve decided today, at this moment, listening to the testimony and listening to people in our party, to withdraw my amendment and resolution to allow us to move forward on a conversation on this as a party.
