Democrat U.S. Senate candidate Texas state Rep. James Talarico (D-Austin) is facing renewed scrutiny after past comments resurfaced in which he accused Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of committing “atrocities” and “hunting people” over border enforcement efforts.

The remarks, made during a 2023 podcast appearance, have resurfaced as Talarico attempts to position himself as a “border security” Democrat while seeking statewide office in Texas.

Critics argue the comments highlight a sharp contrast between Talarico’s current campaign messaging and his previous rhetoric on illegal immigration.

Talarico Compared Abbott’s Border Policies to ‘Atrocities’

Appearing on the Texas in Focus podcast in July 2023, Talarico condemned Abbott’s border security initiatives, including the use of floating barriers and razor wire designed to deter illegal crossings.

“I think Greg Abbott’s border stunts have now become atrocities,” Talarico said.
