Public health data from Colorado shows that patients approved for assisted suicide likely are not being screened by mental health experts, and the assisted suicide reports that doctors submit to the State are sometimes incomplete.

Colorado legalized assisted suicide under its 2016 End-of-Life Options Act. Since then, the State has recorded nearly 2,600 prescriptions for lethal drugs under the law.

Assisted suicide’s supporters have claimed the law contains strong safeguards to protect vulnerable patients, but statistical data from the State of Colorado raises questions about whether that really is the case.

For example, last year 580 patients were approved for assisted suicide in Colorado. Out of all of those patients, only one reportedly was referred to a mental health professional for evaluation. That’s due in part to the fact that mental health evaluations are optional in Colorado. Under the End-of-Life Options Act, mental health referrals typically are limited to cases where the physician prescribing the drugs has doubts about the patient’s decision-making ability. Doctors are not required to get a mental health professional’s opinion about whether the patient may be suffering from mental illness.

A Colorado man who suffocated his healthy 91-year-old mother to death by placing a plastic bag over her head has avoided prison with a slap on the wrist and is now set to inherit a fortune from his dead mom’s estate.

Instead of jailing David Norton for his crime, a liberal judge ordered him to donate $25,000 to an organization that promotes “assisted suicide.”

In a cushy plea deal, Norton, 68, pleaded guilty to manslaughter by aiding suicide and tampering with physical evidence after the death of his mother, Mildred Roller.

Norton and his sister, Kim Roller, were accused of conspiring to end the elderly woman’s life.

However, their mother was not terminally ill and had not been declared mentally incompetent.

According to an autopsy reviewed by a grand jury, Mildred Roller died from “asphyxia due to a bag over the head and displacement of oxygen by nitrogen gas.”

On 17 June, Labour MP Lauren Edwards introduced a new version of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. MPs will vote on whether it should proceed at its second reading on 11 September 2026. That’s less than two months away.

So what’s new?Honestly? Not much.

This is the same bill Kim Leadbeater brought forward in 2024 — the one that spent months being picked apart in the House of Lords, generating more than 1,300 amendments before running out of time in April. The bill fell not because it was defeated, but because Parliament was prorogued. Now it’s back, with two minor Lords amendments incorporated.

The first is a technical Wales amendment. Because delivering health services is devolved to the Welsh Government, the bill now requires the Senedd to give its approval before Welsh Ministers can set up the regulations for assisted dying in Wales. It’s a constitutional housekeeping change. It doesn’t alter what the bill actually does.

The second concerns people with eating disorders. This one is more serious. During the Lords debates earlier this year, peers raised concerns that someone with anorexia could potentially stop eating — deliberately — in order to reach the six-month terminal threshold and qualify for an assisted death. A minor amendment was added in the Lords to address this. But experts who work with people with eating disorders say it doesn’t go far enough. The loophole, they argue, remains. We agree.

90K People Euthanized by Canada since “Assisted Suicide” became Law in 2016

So far, 90,000 people have taken advantage of Canada’s law MAID, (Medical Assistance in Dying) which legalizes assisted suicide. In 2024, there were 16,500 MAID suicides, which accounted for 5% of total deaths that year.

Canada’s average wait time to see a specialist is now at 27.7 weeks, an all-time high, and this fact alone has led to documented suicides, including from a Winnipeg woman who wrote just before her MAID suicide, “I could have had more time if I had more help.”

Ruth Posner, 96, and husband Michael, 97, neither of whom were terminally ill, told friends and family in an email message of their intention to end their lives at Swiss assisted suicide clinic, Pegasos, saying, “There came a point when failing senses, of sight and hearing and lack of energy was not living but existing that no care would improve”.

The couple added, “The decision was mutual and without any outside pressure”.

However, a friend of the couple, Julia Pascal, has questioned this statement, sharing her belief that Ruth was coerced by her husband, Michael, into ending her life.

Pascal, who had known the couple since 1990, described Ruth as being “totally under [Michael’s] control”, saying “Ruth was disempowered”.

“He was very dominant. I spoke to them and sent emails, saying ‘please don’t kill yourselves’. I tried to talk Ruth out of it, but I felt it was too far gone, that she was totally under his control”.

Pascal added, “Ruth sent the email, but I believe Michael would have dictated it to her”.

An Irish woman told her family that she was going on vacation, but instead she went to Switzerland to die by assisted suicide.

The family of Maureen Slough, 58, of Cavan, Ireland, is now saying that the procedures of the clinic that facilitated her death were not sufficient to allow family members the chance to stop Slough.

Megan Royal explained that her mother said she was off to vacation in Lithuania, according to People. Then the truth emerged.

“A close friend of hers messaged me on the Wednesday night, possibly at like 10 p.m. I was in bed with the baby,” the mother of two said. “He just replied like, ‘Your mom’s in Switzerland.’ He’s like, ‘You have a right to know. I was sworn to secrecy. She’s there and she wants assisted suicide.’ I was so scared in that moment.”

Royal eventually contacted her father, who contacted Slough. Although Slough said she would come home, Royal learned the next day her mother was dead.

“What was worse was not only did I get the text on WhatsApp, they had advised me that her ashes would be posted to me in 6-8 weeks,” she said. “In that very moment, because I was alone, I just sat there with the baby and cried… I just felt like my world ended.”

Pegasos, an assisted dying nonprofit in Liestal, Switzerland, was paid £15,000. The Irish Independent reported that Slough paid out €15,000, which is about £13,000, according to Wise.
