Excerpt:

House Speaker Mike Johnson won’t commit to taking any disciplinary action against Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar for her comments blaming Charlie Kirk for his own assassination, despite his power to strip her of committee assignments or put forward a resolution calling for her expulsion from Congress.

In a Sunday appearance on Face the Nation, Johnson decried the danger of name-calling. “I mean calling people Nazis and fascists is not helpful,” Johnson said. “Look, there are some deranged people in society, and when they see leaders using that kind of language so often now, increasingly, it spurs them onto action. We have to recognize that reality and address it appropriately.”

But Johnson didn’t offer details Sunday about what an appropriate response looks like, even though he has a responsibility to respond to the ugly statements Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., made during an interview on the Mehdi Hasan podcast while discussing the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

“There are a lot of people who are out there talking about [Kirk] just wanting to have a civil debate,” Omar said.

“It’s bullsh-t! A complete rewriting of history,” Hasan interjected.

Spanberger has 49% support among registered Virginia voters compared to Earle-Sears’s 40% support, according to a Sept. 9 poll released by Virginia Commonwealth University’s L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. Two months prior, Earle-Sears had 37% support. Spanberger’s percentage remains unchanged.

The latest results suggest that while Earle-Sears has been slowly closing the gap, it may not be enough to overtake Spanberger less than two months before Election Day. Early voting in Virginia’s gubernatorial election begins on Friday, Sept. 19.

Less than half of independent voters, 48%, remain undecided about the race.

Pollster L. Douglas Wilder, the Democratic governor of Virginia from 1990 to 1994, said the election will be determined by independent and undecided voters. He also stressed the national significance of the state race this election cycle.

“With Virginia and New Jersey being the only states holding elections in November, there is much speculation as to what these results portend for the political landscape, not just for the Commonwealth, but across the nation,” Wilder said.

The poll shows other Democratic candidates leading their Republican counterparts.

Official communications from the government of Taiwan continue to use coded language regarding the island’s relationship with mainland China, but Taiwanese leaders are far less ambiguous behind closed doors.

The Washington Examiner traveled to Taipei, Taiwan, to speak with members of the island’s government about their increased push for independence, as well as conservative opposition leaders who fear such rhetoric is thrusting their homeland to the brink of war.

When asked by the Washington Examiner why the current Democratic Progressive Party government is now leaning into rhetoric about full separation from the People’s Republic of China, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung said that it was simply the will of the people.

“There is a consensus in Taiwan that Taiwan is not part of the PRC and Taiwanese people will decide their own future because Taiwan is already a democratic country,” he told the Washington Examiner. “So of course, our people can be their own masters and decide their own future.”

“And according to our opinion poll, in terms of identity, I can assure you that more than 80% of the Taiwanese people believe that they are Taiwanese [instead of Chinese],” Lin added.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Sunday carried out a “precise security operation” to arrest a “prominent” Islamic State (ISIS) leader in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province, a war monitor reported.

The operation, conducted with support from the US-led global coalition, “resulted in the arrest of a prominent ISIS leader,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, adding that it took place in the town of al-Shuhail.

The SDF has carried out numerous operations this year to counter what they say is a resurgence in ISIS activity targeting both their forces and civilians.

The Observatory noted that the suspect was whisked away “to a security agency for further investigation.”

Spain’s Supreme Court Moves Closer to Indicting Ruling Socialist Party – The European Conservative

The Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), currently leading the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, is facing its most serious judicial threat in decades. According to judicial and police sources, Spain’s Supreme Court now has sufficient “indications” to indict the party itself on charges of illegal financing.

The move would mark an unprecedented escalation in the so-called ‘Koldo case’, a corruption scandal that has already implicated several senior Socialist figures. The investigation is being led by Supreme Court justice Leopoldo Puente, who handles a sealed case concerning an alleged criminal organization tied to two former Organization Secretaries of the PSOE: José Luis Ábalos and Santos Cerdán.

The scandal led to the preventive detention of Santos Cerdán, one of Sánchez’s closest allies until just months ago. Judicial documents describe a “multi-million-euro loot” managed by companies and intermediaries.

Investigators point to two key sources of evidence: documentation seized in police raids on Spanish construction companies earlier this year, and irregular expenses and donations linked to Ábalos and Cerdán during their time running the party’s powerful organizational machinery.

According to the Guardia Civil’s Central Operative Unit (UCO), donations allegedly linked to kickbacks from public contracts may have been funneled into the PSOE’s accounts. Since 2014, the Supreme Court has demanded detailed financial records from the party, including membership fees, voluntary contributions, and payments.

The handbook, issued by All-out Defense Mobilisation Agency, features checklists and questions to help residents plans for crises like military invasions or natural disasters on the earthquake-prone island.

Shen Wei-chih, director of the All-Out Defense Mobilisation Agency told Associated Press: “Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, we have felt that much more information needs to be added. It’s back-to-school season, and some teachers have promised that the racist ideas from diversity, equity, and inclusion would not be in their classrooms this year. That’s the good news. The bad news is that many of these teachers and administrators are clearly telling whoppers.

In fact, K-12 schools and colleges around the country are disguising their DEI offices and their racial preferences.

Take Maryland, across the border from the nation’s capital and where many federal bureaucrats sleep and send their children to school.

State education officials said schools would comply with President Donald Trump’s executive orders calling on schools to reject DEI, citing the ways in which DEI programs violate civil rights laws.

Yet schools in Montgomery County, precisely where the swamp lives, still have resources on their website dedicated to DEI and critical race theory.

This wealthy school district, which receives $51.5 million in federal taxpayer spending for children in its lower-income areas, offers online classes for teachers on “How to be an anti-racist and anti-racist educator.” These sessions argue that everything around us is racist because not everyone receives the same rewards in life.

So it does not matter how hard you work in life—everyone should have the same amount. That is “equity,” the course materials say. The way equity’s champions rationalize this to themselves is to say that success is the result of “whiteness,” or systemic racism or some such, not the result of effort.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has endorsed far-left Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race.

After three months of silence, Hochul is now throwing her weight behind a radical candidate who has openly attacked police, pushed communist communal homes schemes, and made controversial remarks about Israel.

In a Sunday evening post on social media, Hochul declared:

“New York City deserves a mayor who will stand up to Donald Trump and make life more affordable for New Yorkers. That’s @ZohranKMamdani.”

The move is a major boost for Mamdani, the 33-year-old Democratic Socialist from Queens.

Mamdani shocked the political establishment in June by defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and nine other rivals to capture the Democrat nomination.

He now holds a commanding double-digit lead in the polls ahead of November.

A month before Charlie Kirk’s killing, billionaire pro-Israel moneyman Bill Ackman arranged an intervention in the Hamptons during which sources say he and others “hammered” Kirk for the conservative leader’s growing criticism of Israeli influence in Washington. Kirk came away fretting about Israeli “blackmail,” sources say, as he contemplated a Catholic conversion.

On September 11, one day after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, billionaire pro-Israel moneyman Bill Ackman took to Twitter/X to trumpet his relationship with the late conservative operative. “I feel incredibly privileged to have spent a day and shared a meal with @charliekirk11 this summer. He was a giant of a man.”

The Grayzone has spoken to five people with intimate knowledge of Kirk’s meeting with Ackman, which was held in early August. According to one source, Kirk was left upset after the gathering turned into an “intervention” where he was “hammered” for his increasingly skeptical views on the US special relationship with Israel, and for platforming prominent conservative critics of Israel at his TPUSA events.

The political climate has changed.

The White House doesn’t see it, which is why Trump and his party are about to step on the rake and smack themselves in the face with a government shutdown.

Punchbowl News reported:

The House Republican leadership plans to put a bill on the floor this week to keep the federal government open through Nov. 20, a strategy aimed at giving appropriators another seven weeks to hash out a broader spending deal for the FY2026 bills.

Republicans are saying the CR will be “clean” — free of partisan policy riders.

But as we’ve reported, the GOP proposal doesn’t include any of the Democrats’ demands. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have said they can’t vote for any CR unless it includes health care-related provisions.

It’s not clear if Democrats are demanding that Republicans renew enhanced premium subsidies for Obamacare or restore OBBB Medicaid cuts. Rather, Schumer and Jeffries have simply called on Republicans to negotiate.

House Republican leaders are moving to again head off votes trying to cancel much of President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariff regime.

A procedural measure Republicans on the Rules Committee advanced Monday night would extend until March 31 a block on efforts by Democrats and several Republicans to end the national emergencies underlying Trump’s sweeping tariffs — including on Mexico, Canada, Brazil and his “liberation day” levies from April.

It would also block “resolutions of inquiry,” measures that can be used by the House to compel the release of information from the executive branch.

The House is set to vote Tuesday on the measure, which also tees up several D.C. crime- and governance-related bills for floor debate.

GOP leaders have struggled to keep their ranks in line on tariff-related votes. On Monday, their bid to strangle a Democratic-led effort to end Trump’s Brazil levies succeeded only narrowly, 200-198.

The Trump administration on Monday added Colombia to a list of nations failing to cooperate in the drug war for the first time in almost 30 years, a stinging rebuke to a traditional U.S. ally that reflects a recent surge in cocaine production and fraying ties between the White House and the country’s leftist president.

Even as it determined that Colombia had failed to comply with its international counternarcotics obligations, the Trump administration issued a waiver of sanctions that would have triggered major aid cuts, citing vital U.S. national interests.

Nonetheless, it is a major step against one of the United States’ staunchest allies in Latin America, and it could further hamper efforts to restore security in the countryside, according to Adam Isacson, a security researcher at the Washington Office on Latin America.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro said he regretted the decision, which overlooked decades of bloodshed by Colombian security forces and civilians all in the name of a U.S.-led drug war.

“These extremely violent drug trafficking cartels pose a threat to National Security, foreign policy, and vital US Interests,” Trump wrote.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office later on Monday, Trump said he had been shown footage of the latest strike by Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Asked what proof the US has that the vessel was carrying drugs, Trump replied, “We have proof. All you have to do is look at the cargo that was spattered all over the ocean — big bags of cocaine and fentanyl all over the place.”

With the enhanced Obamacare subsidies Democrats passed as part of their “Covid emergency” in 2021 set to expire on Dec. 31, congressional Republicans are considering what, if anything, to do about it. In a recent interview, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said, “I don’t love the policy” of extending the subsidies, “but I understand the political realities and the realities of people on the ground.”

Respectfully, I don’t think he understands the political realities in the slightest. Apart from Johnson’s convenient case of amnesia — remember when Republicans said they wanted to repeal Obamacare rather than expand and extend it? — the speaker is ignoring one major issue. Extending the enhanced subsidies would 1) keep taxpayer dollars flowing to plans that fund abortion and 2) allow blue states to create “slush funds” for abortion tourism that undermine the protections that pro-life states, including Johnson’s home state of Louisiana, have worked diligently to enact.

The socialist brand is on the rise, according to recent polling, fueling the left flank of the Democratic Party to argue its ideology is becoming more mainstream.

Shortly after Gallup released data showing Democrats and independents are cooling toward capitalism, a progressive organization is out with a poll finding that more than half of likely Democratic voters prefer socialist-aligned figures like Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Zohran Mamdani to establishment politicians like Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jefrries and Nancy Pelosi.

Democratic voters also view elected officials who describe themselves as democratic socialists about as positively as those who identify as Democrats, and they prefer democratic socialism to capitalism when written definitions of each are read aloud to them, according to the poll conducted by Data for Progress and shared first with POLITICO.

“What the mainstream of the party wants is both democratic socialism as a value system and democratic socialist politicians,” said Gabe Tobias, executive director of the Democratic Socialists of America Fund, a political nonprofit organization that funded the survey with the magazine Jacobin and the Berlin-based democratic socialist group Rosa Luxemburg Foundation.

Though Democratic voters are warming to socialism, the ideology is toxic to most Republicans and many independents, making it difficult for socialists to win in battlegrounds. Even within the Democratic Party, some voters are skeptical about the electability of democratic socialists in swing areas, a reality Sanders faced during his two unsuccessful presidential runs.

Scientists have discovered what’s thought to be the oldest known mummies in the world in southeastern Asia dating back up to 12,000 years.

Mummification prevents decay by preserving dead bodies. The process can happen naturally in places like the sands of Chile’s Atacama Desert or the bogs of Ireland where conditions can fend off decomposition. Humans across various cultures also mummified their ancestors through embalming to honor them or send their souls to the afterlife.

Egypt’s mummies may be the most well-known, but until now some of the oldest mummies were prepared by a fishing people called the Chinchorro about 7,000 years ago in what’s now Peru and Chile.

A new study published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences pushes that timeline back.

To close out as guest host of Charlie Kirk’s podcast, JD Vance went hard against what he called the far left and an increased tolerance for violence on it, saying the administration would be working to dismantle those who celebrate Kirk’s death and political violence against their opponents.

Vance said that after he left Kirk’s family in Arizona, he read a story in the Nation, a leftwing publication, where the author detailed Kirk’s views and, he said, took a quote about a supreme court justice out of context to imply it applied to all Black women.

The magazine was not a “fringe blog” but a “well-funded, well-respected magazine whose publishing history goes back to the American civil war. George Soros’s Open Society Foundation funds this magazine, as does the Ford Foundation and many other wealthy titans of the American progressive movement,” Vance said, hinting at the organizations the administration might target in the aftermath of Kirk’s murder. Vance later mentioned that the foundations that helped fund the magazine are tax-exempt, a sign that the government could go after that status.

“Charlie was gunned down in broad daylight, and well-funded institutions of the left lied about what he said so as to justify his murder,” Vance claimed. “This is soulless and evil, but I was struck not just by the dishonesty of the smear, but by the glee over a young husband’s and young father’s death.”

Vance said Erica Kirk asked his wife, Usha, for advice on how to tell her children that their father had been murdered on the vice-president’s visit to escort Kirk’s remains back to Arizona. As she was asking for that advice, Vance said, “there were people dancing on that father’s grave”.
